The summer sessions begin. Imagine a cool band and a neat catch phrase and some awesome celebrity asking if we are ready for some Aussie Rules Footy! Welcome to 2014 Saturday Morning Footy. YEAH! Unfortunately, the first week was rained out. So this week, a little rain was not going to stop us… if Arlington agreed… whew, they agreed. In spite of the weather we had a pretty strong turnout. Several new players and plenty of returning players, probably close to 30 in all. It is going to be another great season.
Coach Chris started us with some fundamental kicking and hand passing followed by the traditional Sharks and Minnows. This is always a reminder that I did not do enough cardio during the off season and that I need work on fitness. Thanks Coach Chris! After some of the basics, we decided to break off into to smaller groups.
Both the U15’s and U9’s continued to work on skills. In the U15’s we focused on kick progression and continued with several drills and some ultimate footy. The U9’s played their obligatory game of "Rob the Nest" before practicing kicking and handball. The game between the Cats and the Hawks/Tigers combination emphasized the three second rule and properly disposing of the ball.
The U15’s were divided into Eagles and Blues and played a pretty close game. It came down to a single goal allowing the Blues to overcome the Eagles with a stunning goal to take the win.
The U9’s also had a game and separated into Hawks/Tigers and Cats. It too was a close game and in the end the Hawks won 39-37.
It was a good day for footy and it was outstanding to see everyone. I am excited that this will be our best SMF season ever. Before I close, I am reminded that this program is only great because of the support of the great people that continue to volunteer, coach, bring snacks and work the registration. There are more opportunities than ever and we are always looking for help. If you have the time, desire or just want to share your unique talents please take the time to talk to Chris Adams.
Thanks to everyone for coming out to play and I hope to see all next week. It’s free. It’s fun. It’s Footy! Come play Aussie Rules with us!
